Earlier this week, I found myself in Liverpool for a client meeting. Before heading back, I took a short walk along the waterfront with a cup of coffee in hand, naturally.

There’s something about historic port cities that encourages reflection.
Standing by the Mersey, I was reminded that cities like Liverpool didn’t become global centres of commerce simply because opportunity existed. Opportunity alone has never been enough. They flourished because uncertainty could be understood, managed, and, perhaps most importantly, shared.
That thought led me to insurance.
Insurance rarely occupies centre stage in conversations about economic development. It operates quietly in the background, often only noticed when something goes wrong. Yet history tells a different story. Maritime trade, international commerce, industrial expansion, and global investment have all relied on one fundamental capability: the ability to transfer and manage risk.
Without that confidence, ships would have sailed less frequently, investments would have been more cautious, and innovation would have progressed more slowly.
In many ways, insurance has always been an enabler of progress.
While the nature of risk has evolved dramatically, the underlying purpose of insurance has remained remarkably consistent.
Yesterday’s challenges revolved around ships, cargo, piracy, and unpredictable weather.
Today’s organisations face cyber threats, climate related events, geopolitical uncertainty, interconnected supply chains, AI risks, and rapidly evolving regulatory landscapes.
Different risks. Same mission.
The insurance industry continues to provide the confidence that allows businesses to innovate, invest, expand into new markets, and recover when the unexpected happens.
What is changing, however, is how we deliver on that mission.
The future of insurance isn’t simply about better underwriting models or more sophisticated analytics, important as they are. It’s about making risk solutions easier to access, faster to deliver, and more closely aligned with customer outcomes.
Digital transformation, data driven decision making, automation, and improved customer experiences are not ends in themselves. They are means to the same enduring objective: helping individuals and organisations move forward with confidence.
For those of us working across transformation within the London Market and the broader insurance ecosystem, it’s an important reminder. Technology should never distract us from purpose. Every process we simplify, every capability we modernise, and every customer interaction we improve ultimately contributes to the industry’s core role as an enabler of economic resilience and growth.
Sometimes, stepping away from the meeting room offers the clearest perspective.
A few quiet minutes by Liverpool’s waterfront served as a reminder that behind every thriving economy is an ecosystem built on trust, resilience, and the confidence to take calculated risks.
Insurance may not always be visible.
But it remains one of the quiet architects of progress.
Sometimes, all it takes is a coffee by the riverside to reconnect today’s transformation efforts with centuries of purpose.
A Thought Before You Go…
If reflections like these resonate with you, one of the best ways I have found to continue learning is through books, especially during commutes, walks, or while travelling between client meetings.
I’ve been an avid listener of audiobooks for years, and Audible has become one of my favourite ways to explore ideas on leadership, strategy, history, behavioural science, and business transformation.
